CAN I MIX HAZARDOUS WASTES?

The Hazardous Waste Regulations do not permit the mixing of different categories of hazardous wastes or the mixing of hazardous wastes with non-hazardous wastes. They also state that they should be stored separately on site.

WHAT DO I NEED TO DO IF MY WASTE IS HAZARDOUS?

Under the Hazardous Waste Regulations 2005, hazardous waste producers are required to pre-register before any hazardous waste can be collected from their premises.

Some sites are exempt, for example offices, shops, schools and hospitals do not need to register if they produce less than 200kg of hazardous waste per annum. However, all other premises do need to register, even if they produce less than 200kg of hazardous waste.

WHY DO I NEED TO REGISTER?

The Environment Agency needs to know who is producing hazardous waste so that they can inspect the sites to ensure that the waste is being handled properly.

HOW DO I REGISTER?

We are able to register your site for you, just call us on 0845 618 7322 and we will be happy to help you.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I DO NOT REGISTER

Waste carriers will not collect from an unregistered producer. Failure to register as a producer of hazardous waste is a prosecutable offence and could result in a fine of up to £5000 or a prison sentence. The Environment Agency is also permitted to issue fixed penalty notices for £300 for minor infringements.
